Acidosis

Acidosis is a condition that falls into a category of problems known as acid-base disorders. It is characterized by an increase in the acidity of the blood. Normally, if this happens, the body is able to solve the problem on its own and bring itself back into balance. If it is unable to do so, how ever, various problems can result.

There are two primary types of acidosis: respiratory due to breathing difficulties and metabolic due to chemical changes within the body. Sometimes both the factors exit simultaneously. Respiratory acidosis occurs when, for whatever reason, the body cannot adequately expel carbon dioxide (CO2) through the breath. Anything that adversely affects the ability to breath-lung disease, an overdose of sedatives, extreme obesity, muscular problems, or anything else-can cause chronic respiratory acidosis. Acute respiratory acidosis can be a result of a foreign body stuck in the airway, an overdose of medication, trauma, or heart attack, among other things. Symptoms can include headache, drowsiness, muscle twitching or tremors, and/or changes in consciousness that can progress to coma if the situation is not corrected.

Metabolic acidosis occurs when there are chemical changes to the body's normal state that occur too fast for the body to cope with them. Possible causes include fluid loss due to vomiting, insulin-dependent diabetes, severe blood loss or shock, overdoses of certain drugs, chemical toxicities, true starvation, severe alcoholism, serious kidney disease, and prolonged diarrhea. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, feeling of weakness, frequent yawning, and breathing that is deeper and/or more rapid than normal; through some people with mild acidosis have no symptoms at all. If the condition is severe, it can lead to shock.

General recommendations for acidosis

Consider learning and practicing yoga. Yoga helps to improve circulation and digestion, relives stress, and requires deep breathing, which is alkalinizing.
