Acidosis Treatment

Read more about...

Treatment for acidosis depends on the underlying cause. Acute acidosis usually requires hospitalization, with sophisticated laboratory testing and measures to correct the body's imbalance. Chronic acidosis that is not too severe may be handled on an outpatient basis. In either case, maintaining proper levels of fluids and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium is also an important part of treatment.

Treatment for Respiratory Acidosis:

Treatment for respiratory acidosis usually includes: Bronchodilator drugs, Supplimental oxygen therapy, Smoking cessation, Weight loss program (in case of pickwickian syndrome), Non-invasive positive-pressure ventilation. In some cases, use of mechanical ventilators may also be warranted.

Treatment for Diabetic acidosis:

This is usually treated in hospital and sometimes in an intensive care unit. Treatment consists of: intravenous fluids, first with salt-containing fluids and then glucose fluids, intravenous insulin drip-feed, potassium supplements added to the infusion, antibiotics if an infection is identified.

Treatment for Lactic Acidosis:

The treatment of lactic acidosis involves several interventions and supportive care measures.
