- Eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet. This is very important for the health of the skin. The Chinese believe that acne is tied to inefficient and incomplete digestion, which results in toxic metabolites that show up on the skin. A skin healthy diet emphasizes raw and lightly cooked vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables that contain valuable trace minerals and are rich in fiber. Fresh green vegetables are essential. Also include in your diet lean protein sources and complex carbohydrates, such as rice, whole-grain bread, potatoes, and legumes. These fiber-rich foods help ensure a clean gastrointestinal tract, which is especially important in the management of acne. Eat three healthy meals daily to provide important nutrients and to decrease your appetite for surgery or greasy fried foods.
- Drink plenty of spring water every day to help flush toxins from your body.
- Limit your intake of animal fats and hydrogenated oils for at least one or two months. This means cutting back on dairy products, margarine, fatty red meats, unskinned poultry, and all fried foods. This step alone can sometimes result in a dramatic improvement.
- Avoid foods that contain additives and preservatives. These chemicals contribute to the amount of toxins in the body.
- Avoid alcohol, sodas, chocolate, fried foods, and refined sugar. Each of these contributes to an acidic internal environment, which may foster the development of acne.
- Excessive amounts of iodine in the diet can be a problem for some people with acne. Many dermatologists believe that consuming over 1,000 micrograms of iodine daily will eventually cause a problem. Significant quantities of iodine are commonly found in fast foods. Shrimp and shellfish are also high in iodine, as are sea vegetables such as nori, hijiki, arame, and kombu. Keep your consumption of these foods to a low level. Also avoid using iodized salt at the table and in cooking. Eating foods high in zinc, such as whole grains, may be helpful as well.
