- Eat a diet that is high in fiber and includes plenty of lean, clean protein foods such as chicken, fish, and soy products. A high-fiber diet, including plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, prevents constipation, keeps the gastrointestinal tract healthy, and has been shown to help prevent heart disease, cancer, and all gastrointestinal tract disorders.
- Enjoy the cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts) often. These vegetables have powerful antioxidant agents, including the enzymes super oxide dismutase (SOD), that work to prevent premature aging.
- Eat plenty of leafy greens and yellow-orange vegetables, including carrots, peaches, cantaloupe, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and apricots. These foods contain phytochemicals called carotenes. Beta-carotene, the best known of this group, has been found to provide protection against the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays, which initiate free-radical formation that leads to both premature aging of the skin and skin cancer.
- Include in your diet sardines, salmon, wheat germ, asparagus, spinach, and white mushrooms. These foods are rich in the nucleic acids DNA and RNA, which improve skin color and texture, help fade age spots, and increase energy levels.
- Grape juice and red wine contain compounds that act as antioxidants and protect the blood vessels. Enjoy a glass of either daily.
- Drink green tea often. Green tea contains potent antioxidant agents that protect against premature aging. It is rich in polyphenols that are destroyed in the fermenting processes used to produce ordinary black tea. Studies show that green tea helps to ward off heart disease, reduce the risk of stroke and cancer, bring down high blood pressure, combat cold and flu symptoms, and even fight dental decay and bad breath. One double-blind European study showed that drinking two cups of green tea every day can help decrease excess body fat as well.
- Reishi mushrooms, long considered a delicacy in East Asia, fight the effects of aging on normal immune function. They also fight viruses and bacteria, inhibit tumor growth, lower cholesterol, and reduce blood pressure.
- Avoid foods and beverages containing caffeine and / or refined sugars. These substances stress the body and can deplete valuable nutrients. If you consume alcohol, do so in moderation only.
