Alcoholism Diet

Following are dietary guidelines for the people suffered from alcoholism.

A healthy, well-balanced diet is very important. Alcoholics often get more of their daily calories from alcohol than from alcohol than from nutrient-dense food. Moreover, alcohol itself depletes the body of certain nutrients, particularly the water-soluble vitamins and minerals such as calcium and magnesium. As a result, alcoholics are likely to suffer from multiple nutritional deficiencies.

Particularly during the withdrawal period (about two to four weeks for most people, through it can continue for up to a year in some cases), eat five small, nutrient-dense meals daily, plus a nutritious snack or two as needed, to keep your blood-sugar level on an even keel. Alcohol raises blood sugar levels quickly, so when a person who is used to consuming large quantities of alcohol stops drinking his or her blood-sugar level is likely to become unbalanced.

Detoxification involves bringing the blood-sugar regulating mechanism back into balance. For the same reason, avoid foods containing sugars and other refined carbohydrates.
