Following are nutritional supplements for alcoholism.
- Alcohol is a source of free a source of free radicals and is damaging to many cells in the body. Antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, and E; the mineral selenium; and the amino acid cysteine, are nutrients that fight free-radical damage. Take 5,000 international units of vitamin A, 200 to 400 micrograms of selenium, and 500 milligrams of N-acetylcysteine daily. Also take 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C with bioflavonoid three times daily and 400 international units of vitamin E twice daily.
- Most alcoholics are deficient in the B vitamins, which are required to strengthen and restore the nervous system. Serious deficiency of the B vitamins is also a factor in delirium tremens. Take a B-complex supplement that supplies 25 milligrams of each of the primary B vitamins two to three times daily.
- Carnitine, a substance related to the B vitamins but often grouped with the amino acids, has been shown to restore normal transport of fatty acids from the liver. It helps to reduce free fatty acid levels and reduces elevated triglycerides and liver enzymes. Start by taking a dose of 250 to 500 milligrams of L-carnitine with break-fast. After one week, add a third dose, so that you are taking 250to 500 milligrams with each meal. Continue taking L-carnitine for three to four months.
- Chromium helps to even out blood-sugar levels and prevent hypoglycemia, which can be a problem for recovering alcoholics. Take 200 micrograms of chromium once or twice a day.
- Choline helps restore normal liver function. Take 500 milligrams of choline twice daily.
- Glutathione is an amino-acid compound that aids in detoxification of the liver. It is required by many of the body's systems for healthy functioning. Take 500 milligrams of magnesium twice daily to correct deficiency and ease nervousness.
- If you have an underactive thyroid, you are likely to feel very sluggish and very tired when you stop drinking. To counteract those symptoms, take 500 milligrams of the amino acid L-tyrosine twice daily, one dose before breakfast and the other before lunch, for up to three weeks.
- Vitamin A and beta-carotene help to repair the liver and strengthen liver function. Take 5, 000 international units of vitamin A and 25, 000 international units of beta-carotene twice a day.
- Most alcoholics suffer from a deficiency of zinc. The body requires zinc to manufacture the enzymes essential for the detoxification of alcohol. Low levels of this mineral therefore make it difficult for the liver to metabolize alcohol, leading to more toxicity and a greater risk of cirrhosis. Take 25 milligrams of zinc twice a day.
