- Calcium and magnesium are important nutrients for the allergy sufferer. They help to relax an over reactive nervous system. While symptoms are acute, take a supplement containing 750 to 1,000 milligrams of calcium and 500 milligrams of magnesium twice a day. Then take the same dosage once a day for two months.
- Allergies are often related to the transformation and transportation of foods in the digestive system. Taking a digestive-enzyme supplement will enhance the assimilation and utilization of nutrients. Take a full-spectrum digestive-enzyme supplement providing 5,000 international units of lipase, 2,500 international units of amylase and 300 international units of protease, plus 500 to 1,000 milligrams of pancreatic immediately after each meal.
- Essential fatty acids such as those found in black currant seed, borage, evening primrose, and flaxseed oils help to regulate the inflammatory response. Take 500 to 1,000 milligrams of any of these oils twice each day for one month.
- Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a good of sulfur, a trace mineral that may help to reduce the severity of the allergic response. Take 500 milligrams three or four times daily, with meals.
- Selenium is an antioxidant and works synergistically with vitamin E. Take 50 to 100 micrograms twice a day during the allergy season.
- Thymus glandular extract helps to strengthen immune function and diminish the allergic response. Take a product supply 30 milligrams of pure thymus polypeptides twice a day, with breakfast and lunch, for six weeks.
- The B-complex vitamins help to support. For seasonal allergy symptoms, take a B-vitamin complex supplying at least 25 milligrams of each of the major B vitamins each day for two three months.
- Pantothenic acid, one of the B vitamins, is exceptional for resolving the acute symptoms of a respiratory allergic reaction. Take 250 to 500 milligrams three to four times daily for one week, then reduce the dosage to 250 milligrams three to four times daily, as needed, for an additional week. You can also take pathetic acid in anticipation of the hay fever season to prevent symptoms before they start. When taking individual B vitamins, it is a good idea to take a balanced B-complex supplement separately, at a different time of day.
- If you suffer from allergic rhinitis coupled with fatigue and constipation, vitamin B12 may be helpful. Take 500 micrograms once a day for one week.
- Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory properties. During acute flare-ups, take 1,000 milligrams five times a day for four to five days. Follow this with 1,000 milligrams three times a day for three weeks; then take 1,000 milligrams a day for two months. Some people with allergies find mineral ascorbate vitamin C or esterified vitamin C easier to tolerate than simple ascorbic acid.
- Bioflavonoids are potent anti-inflammatories with specific antiallergic effects and are best taken with vitamin C. Bioflavonoids are chemically related to cromolyn sodium. Take 1,000 milligrams three times a day for two weeks.
