Anaphylactic Shock Treatment

As the slightest sign that you may be having difficulty breathing due to a severe allergic reaction-especially if you have a history of such reactions-have someone take you immediately to the emergency room of the nearest hospital. If there is no one available to transport you, call for emergency help and stress the gravity of the situation. Seconds count. If an emergency adrenaline-injection kit such as Ana-kit or Epi-Pen is available, administer it immediately, either as you are on your way to the hospital or while you are waiting for assistance. Do not take anything to eat or drink while you are experiencing breathing distress.

Rely on emergency personnel to take appropriate measure. They will probably administer an injection of epinephrine at once. Bronchodilators are sometimes used as well to counteract the allergen, decrease inflammation, and open the airway to restore free breathing and intravenous fluids are often given to maintain adequate blood pressure, which can lower considerably. Antihistamines, oxygen, and even cortocosteroids may be required later in treatment, depending upon the extent of the attack.
