- Conventional treatment of anemia depends on the underlying cause. A number of different blood tests may be done to determine the exact type of anemia and the cause.
- Anemia resulting from nutritional deficiencies is usually treated with supplemental forms of the missing nutrients. Iron may be taken in either tablet or injection form. If the iron depletion is very severe, a blood transfusion may be necessary. Vitamin B12 is usually taken by mouth, but if the deficiency is serious, injections are preferred. For folate-deficiency anemia, high doses of supplemental folic acid are prescribed. When nutritional anemia is addressed with dietary corrections and proper supplementation, there is almost always fast improvement.
- Pernicious anemia is treated with injections of vitamin B12. This successfully counteracts the effects of the disorder, but it does not actually cure it, so treatment must be continued for life.
- There is no treatment that can cure sickle cell anemia. Treatment focuses on managing the acute crises. During an episode, antibiotics and painkillers, possibly narcotics, may be prescribed. Occasionally, transfusions may be necessary to manage complications.
- Mild cases of thalassemia generally require no treatment. Severe cases are treated with periodic blood transfunctions. In some cases, surgery to remove the spleen may be recommended.
- Treatment for aplastic anemia generally begins with the administration of antibiotics to treat any existing infection and drugs to simulate the narrows production of red blood cells. Transfusion may be necessary and, in extreme cases, bone-marrow transplantation may be advised.
- With hemolytic anemia, the first step in treatment is identifying the cause of red blood cell destruction. If it is found to be a response to a drug, the drug is discontinued; may be prescribed to suppress immune function. Another option is surgical removal of the spleen.
