Nutritional supplements for asthma are intended to prevent or support recovery from an asthma attack, rather than to treat an acute episode. In the event of an acute asthma attack, seek immediate medical treatment.
- Allergy-induced asthma is often related to imperfect digestion. Supplementing your diet with digestive enzymes will improve your absorption and utilization of nutrients. Take a full-spectrum digestive-enzyme supplement providing 5,000 international units of lipase, 2,500 international units of amylase, and 300 international units of protease, plus 500 to 1,000 milligrams of pancreatin, with each meal.
- Omeg-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids (EFAs) help to regulate the inflammatory response. Flaxseed and fish oils are good source of omega-3 EFAs; good sources of omega-6 EFAs include black current seed oils, borage oil, and evening primrose oil. Take 50 to 1,000 milligrams of any of those oils twice daily for two to three months. A combination of omega-3 and omega-6 may be more effective for some people.
- Magnesium has a bronchodilating effect if taken in the proper dosage. Some doctors give magnesium sulfate by injection to treat acute asthma attacks. Try taking 500 milligrams of magnesium twice a day. If you develop loose stools, reduce the dosage.
- Pantothenic acid, one of the B vitamins, supports adrenal function and the nervous system. Take 250 to 500 milligrams three times a day for one month. If you take any of the B vitamins individually, you should also take a B-complex supplement at a different time of day.
- Quercetin is an antioxidant flavonoid that has properties similar to those of of cromolyn sodium. Take 30 to 100 milligrams twice a day.
- A deficiency of vitamin B12 has been linked to some types of asthmatic conditions. Taken in either oral or injectable forms, this vitamin can help to prevent asthma attacks. Discuss this with a nutritionally oriented physician.
- Many adults with asthma suffer from compromised adrenal function but are unaware of it. You may find it helpful to take adrenal glandular extract for short periods oftime. Take 150 milligrams three times daily, with meals, for three weeks.
