- In general a dry cough need not be encouraged and can be treated with a cough suppressant. Dextromethorphan is an ingredient found in many over-the-counter cough preparations. It can usually be identified by the initials DM on the label. Codeine is a narcotic that is included in many prescription cough suppressants. Nearly all cough suppressants are mood-altering and may cause drowsiness.
- A wet cough indicates that the body is attempting to eliminating excess mucus. In this case, an expectorant, such as guaifenesin may be helpful. Expectorants help to thin secretions so that they are easier to cough out.
- A bronchodilator, such as metaproterenol or albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin), may be prescribed to relax the airways, stop wheezing, and ease breathing. These medicines also have a tendency to speed up the heart rate and may make you feel anxious.
- Unlike pneumonia, bronchitis does not usually require the use of antibiotics. However, if your doctor determines that the bronchitis is caused by a bacterial infection, he or she will prescribe an antibiotic. Since bacterial bronchitis is relatively rare, if your doctor prescribes an antibiotic, be sure to ask why he or she believes that this is an important part of your treatment.
