- The primary conventional treatment is counseling, particularly congnitive-beghavioral therapy, to modify behavior patterns and deal with mental or emotional problems, such as depression and low self-esteem, that are contributing to this behavior.
- Antidepressants, predominantly fluoxetine (Prozac), are often prescribed, and seem to be helpful not only for relieving depression but combining bulimia. Fluoxetine is a type of drug called a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by increasing the level of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is closely tied to mood, in the brain. Besides improving mood, SSRIs tend to depress the appetite. Potential side effects include anxiety, insomnia, tremor, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, rash, and changes in blood-sugar levels.
- The consequences of repeated vomiting may need to be treated. Problems with the teeth should be addresses by a dentist. Chronic inflammation of the throat and esophagus may be treated with liquid antacids or bismuth preparations. Electrolyte imbalances may require treatment with intravenous fluids. Bronchitis, hemorrhoids, and constipation are treated symptomatically.
- If you suffer from bulimia, you should have your gastrointestinal tract and thyroid, adrenal, and hormonal function tested. A dysfunction in any of these important systems can cause a predisposition to bulimia.
- Most people with bulimia are deficient in important nutrients. See a physician who can administer the necessary tests to detect nutritional deficiencies.
