Bunion

If the bony structure of the big toe is forced out of normal alignment, the result is a hard bump, or bunion. Described medically as hallux valgus (displacement of the great toe toward the other toes), bunions are characterized by enlargement of the joint at the base of the big toe, resulting in that joint protruding abnormally from the foot. In some people, the top of the big toe overlaps one or more of the smaller ones.

A bunion result from continuing inflammation, and subsequent thickening, of the bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that acts as a kind of cushion for a joint or other structure. Women in particular are subject to bunions. That's because many fashionable ladies forgo comfort and choose instead stylish shoes that pinch and squeeze. Too-tight, too-small shoes with pointed toes and too-high heels force the toes out of alignment. Although bunions do tend to run in Families and it is possible to inherit a weakness of the joint, the primary cause of bunions is wearing shoes that do not conform to the normal contour of the toes. It is no wonder, then, that women are three times more likely to suffer from bunions than men are.

Bunions can be so painful that it becomes difficult to walk normally. Without proper treatment, a bunion that is continually irritated will only get worse.
