Chlamydia can be cured with antibiotics. The disease does not cause long-term problems if it is treated before complications develop. Untreated chlamydia can lead to many complications.

Because it is a leading cause of infertility in women, chlamydia is treated aggressively with antibiotics. In general, drug of the tetracycline class-tetracycline (also sold under the brand name Achromycin), doxycycline (Doryx, Monodox, Vibramycin, Vibra-Tabs), and others are preferred. If you are pregnant or cannot tolerate tetracycline, erythromycin is used.

Some doctors prescribe a more expensive antibiotic called azithromycin (Zithromax). The advantage of this drug is that it can be used, but tend to be slightly less effective. Treatment is usually prescribes for a period of three weeks. Often, sexually partners are treated as well, even if they gave no symptoms whatsoever as they may still be infected.
