Any injury to the head, no matter what the cause, may result in concussion. At some point, we all experience a hard knock on the head from one cause or another. The severity of the symptoms will depend on the extent of injury to the brain.

After a simple concussion, you may seem disoriented or lose consciousness briefly. You may have no memory of events just prior to and immediately following the injury. Headaches, dizziness, and drowsiness are all common immediately after awakening. Such symptoms usually disappear within a few weeks, but can last as long as several months, or even longer, in some cases.

If you suffer a head injury, monitor yourself closely afterward. If any of the following symptoms occurs, even as much as four weeks after a seemingly mild bang on the head, seek medical attention immediately:

Preventive measures for Concussion

Wear protective headgear whenever you engage in such activities as bicycle or motorcycle riding, roller-blading, skateboarding, boxing, or playing football or hockey.

When in car, always wear your seat belt, whether you are a driver or a passenger. In airplanes, keep your seat belt fastened at all times, except when you must leave your seat.
