Bilberry provides important nutrients that nourish the eyes and enhance visual function. Phytochemicals called anthocyanidins in this herb also help prevent damage to the structures of the eyes. Select a preparation containing 25 percent anthocyanidins (also called PCOs) and take 20 to 40 milligrams three times daily.
Eyebright is rich in vitamin A and vitamin C. It also contains moderate amounts of the B-complex vitamins, vitamin D, and traces of vitamin E. Eyebright has been used for centuries both as eyewash and in tea form as a tonic for the eyes. Taken internally, it helps maintain healthy eyes and good vision. Take 250 to 500 milligrams three times daily. Used as eyewash, it helps relieve the discomfort arising from eyestrain, inflammation, and minor irritation. To make eyebright eyewash, bring 3 ounces of sterile saline solution to a boil, and pour it over 1 tablespoon of dried cut herb (or one eyebright teabag). Allow it to steep for fifteen minutes, and then strain out the herb. When the liquid has cooled to a comfortable temperature, use it as eyewash. Bathe your eyes with the eyewash and/or prepare a compress by moistening a sterile cloth in the warm infusion. Place the compress over the closed eye, pressing down gently to achieve contact with the affected area. Relax for at least ten minutes. Then moisten a fresh sterile cloth in the eyewash tea and gently wipe away any crusts or scales. Throw away (or sterilize) each cloth after one use. Never reuse the cloth after contact with the eye. To do s is to invite reinfection.
Ginkgo biloba extract contains flavonoids with an affinity for organs that are rich in connective tissue, including the eyes. Ginkgo protects cellular membranes and has notable antioxidant properties. It also enhances the use of oxygen and glucose by the cells, and works to normalize circulation. Select gingko leaf extracts containing 24 percent gingko heterosides (sometimes also called flavoglycosides) and take 40 milligrams three times daily.
