Licorice has antibacterial properties, soothes the throat and respiratory tract, and tastes sweet. For a cough, licorice works best when taken in warm tea form. Take one cup three times daily for up to five days.

Note: Do not take licorice on a daily basis for more than five days in a row, as it can elevate blood pressure. Do not take it all if you have high blood pressure.

Marshmallow root and slippery elm are soothing to the throat and respiratory tract. These are the herbs to use with a dry cough. Make a combination tea and take one cup three times daily for up to fie days. Or take 500 milligrams of each in capsule form three times daily for up to five days.

Menthol lozenges contain a purified and refined form of peppermint oil, which is recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an effective cough suppressant. Menthol lozenges made without sugar are preferable. Take one lozenge each hour or two, as needed, up to a total of four lozenges a day for up to five days.

When you first begin to cough, take mullein tea. This is a very effective herb known to be highly beneficial to the throat and lungs. It is particularly good in the early stages of a cough, before an expectorant is needed. Take one cup two or three times daily for two or three days. You can add honey and lemon to the tea or flavor.

Osha root is highly aromatic and helps to clear the lungs. It is especially good for a dry cough. Take one cup of osha-root tea three times a day for three to four days.

A tea made from sage and thyme helps to clear mucus out of the lungs. Take one cup three times daily for two days.

For a cough complicated by constipation, take ¼ cup of aloe vera juice three times daily until the situation is resolved.

If a cough is accompanied by diarrhea, lungwort is the herbal medicine of choice. Lungwort is high in vitamin C, has astringent properties, and is known for its ability to help clear a cough. Take 500 milligrams or a cup of lungwort tea two or three times daily for two or three days.
