Decompression Sickness Treatment

For pain, aspirin is usually the only medication recommended. Doctors generally avoid prescribing stronger painkillers because they can distort observable responses to recompression.

Emergency Treatment
Decompression sickness is considered a medical emergency. If you have been subjected to a change in pressure and develop any of the symptoms discussed above, seek emergency medical help. You should do this even if initial symptoms seem relatively mild, as they can worsen fairly quickly and the syndrome can progress to the point where it becomes life threatening. If you have decompression sickness, you will have to be hospitalized and placed in a high-pressure oxygen chamber. This will force the gas bubbles to once again dissolve in the blood. You will then be brought back to normal pressure gradually, under controlled conditions. While you are undergoing treatment, your fluid levels will be closely monitored, and you may be given steroids to decrease inflammation. Even before you receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy, medical personnel should administer continuous standard oxygen treatment, even if you are showing no obvious signs of oxygen deprivation.
