Dehydration Treatment

For simple, mild to moderate dehydration, consuming an oral hydrating product such as Gatorade or Power Ade, along with plenty of water, is usually sufficient to correct the problem.

If taking fluids orally does not correct the situation, intravenous treatments with fluid solutions that include mineral salts may be necessary.

If dehydration is the result of illness, measures should be taken to determine and eliminate the cause, or at least to interrupt the loss of fluids with antidiarrheal or antinausea drugs, as appropriate.

An examination of any medications you are taking is important. Medications, especially diuretics, can contribute to dehydration, especially if you are not in the habit of drinking enough fluids in the first place.
