In general, a good multivitamin and mineral supplement is useful for people with diabetes. Choose a formula that provides at least the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of all the major vitamins and minerals, and follow the dosage directions on the product label.
Beta-carotene and vitamin D can be helpful for people with diabetes. Take 10,000 international units of beta-carotene twice a day and 200 to 400 international units of vitamin D daily.
Chromium helps to stabilize blood sugar. Take 100 micrograms of chromium twice a day. If you are battling diabetic retinopathy, take 200 micrograms twice daily for three months, then reduce to 100 micrograms daily. Though GTF chromium is probably the best-absorbed form of this mineral, most of the studies that have been done on the use of chromium have used chromium chloride, the cheapest form, which seems to be adequately effective. Recent studies have shown that doses up to 1,000 micrograms (1 milligram) can be very effective for managing type II diabetes, and if you are considering taking chromium in such doses, the economy of using chromium chloride may become significant. Chromium does not appear to be toxic even in very high doses, but you should discuss this approach with your doctor before taking megadoses.
Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant that fights free-radical damage and is a blood oxygenator. Because the eye is so richly supplied with tiny blood vessels, this is another nutrient that can help in cases of retinopathy. Take 50milligrams of coenzyme Q10 twice daily for up to three months, and then reduce the dosage to 30 milligrams daily.
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), found in black currant seed oil, borage oil, and evening primrose oil, has been shown to be helpful for improving damaged nerve function, which is common in diabetes. Take 500 to 1,000 milligrams of any of these oils twice daily.
Germanium and selenium are antioxidant minerals. Take 10 milligrams of germanium and 200 micrograms of selenium daily.
Green-foods supplements are full of trace minerals and help to energize the blood. Take a green-foods supplement as directed on the product label.
Lipoic acid has shown considerable promise in protecting the cells in the pancreas that manufacture insulin. It seems to be helpful for both type I and type II diabetes, which is unusual. Take 100 to 500 milligrams daily.
People with diabetes have a tendency to lose excessive amounts of minerals in their urine. Take a multimineral formula that includes 1,200 milligrams of calcium, 600 to 800 milligrams of magnesium, 5 milligrams of manganese, and 15 to 50 milligrams of zinc daily.
Take an additional 300 milligrams of magnesium daily. This mineral is especially important for anyone who has a family history of cardiovascular disease.
Selenium is a valuable antioxidant mineral. Take 200 micrograms daily.
Vanadium, or vanadyl sulfate, may reduce the need for insulin. What is unique about this nutrient is that its effects may persist even after you stop taking it. Take 250 micrograms two or three times daily.
Take a good vitamin-B complex supplement daily. The B vitamins are necessary for the processes that convert glucose into energy and for a healthy nervous system.
Vitamin C and the bioflavonoids may be useful for preventing damage to the nerves caused by excessively elevated blood sugar. Take 500 to 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C and 500 milligrams of mixed bioflavonoids two or three times daily.
People with diabetes have a higher than usual need for vitamin E, which improves insulin activity and acts as an antioxidant and acts as an antioxidant and a blood oxygenator. The most impressive study on vitamin E and diabetes used a total of 1,350 international units of d-alpha-tocopheryl acetate daily, divided into three doses. Begin by taking 400 international units each morning. After two weeks, add another dose of 400 international units in the evening. After two more weeks, add another 400 international units in the afternoon.
Zinc is helpful in regulating insulin metabolism. Take up to 50 milligrams of zinc daily from all sources, including your multivitamin and mineral supplements.
