Your primary concern when dealing with diarrhea is to prevent dehydration. During the acute phase of diarrhea, when the stools are frequent and watery, make sure you take in enough fluids. Take frequent small sips or drinks of water. You may wish to use an oral electrolyte drink such as Gatorade. Or you can use a homemade formula containing ½ to 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. baking soda, 4 tsp. table sugar, and I pint of fruit juice added to 1 pint of good spring water. However, it is not well established that using an electrolyte formula is much more effective than sipping broth, or even good spring water, and allowing lost minerals to be replaced in foods once the appetite returns.
As long as you are acutely sick with diarrhea, you probably will not want to eat very much. It is better not to force yourself to eat solid foods until your body responds with a renewed interest in food. Sip clear liquids, such as spring water, broths, diluted apple juice, and herbal teas. Avoid filling your stomach, so that your stomach and intestines will have time to rest and heal. An upset digestive tract is like any other injury. Do not expect it to heal overnight.
If you have repeated episodes of diarrhea, rest your gastrointestinal tract as much as possible. To avoid dehydration, take repeated small sips of water, miso soup, or diluted fruit juices.
If you are vomiting in addition to having diarrhea, even a small sip of water can cause another upset. If vomiting occurs after you drink water, wait one hour and then suck on small chips of ice. If the ice does not trigger the vomiting reflex, after an hour of calm has passed, take more chips of ice or small sips of water. As an alternative, try taking a tsp. of Emetrol syrup or raw honey to settle your stomach.
As you start to feel better, eat a simple diet so that your digestive tract can easily process and absorb nutrients. Start by drinking barley or rice water in small sips throughout the day. Carrot soup and cooked carrots are also good.
As improvement continues, eat foods that are easily digested and absorbed, such as pureed rice, bananas, dry cereal, crackers, toast, mashed potatoes (without butter), well-cooked vegetables, and grains.
To give your intestines time to settle and heal, avoid dairy products during an episode of diarrhea and for two weeks after it is resolved.
Eliminate foods that are difficult to digest. Protein food should be avoided for about forty-eight hours. Fats should be eliminated from the diet during any illness. They are difficult even for a healthy body to digest, and having a distressed intestinal tract makes it even harder. Undigested fats contribute to a toxic internal environment.
Eliminate refined sugars, especially if the diarrhea is bacterial in origin. Bacteria thrive in the presence of sugar. Sugar also makes the body more acidic. An overly acidic internal environment slows healing.
Avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea, and alcohol, as they stress the intestinal tract.
