Echinacea and goldenseal have antiviral and astringent properties. They also stimulate the immune system, help detoxify the blood, and soothe irritated mucous membranes. Take one dose of an Echinacea and goldenseal combination formula supplying 350 to 500 milligrams of Echinacea and 250 to 350 milligrams of goldenseal three times daily during a herpes outbreak. A liquid formula is preferred because it is more bioavailable, meaning that the body more readily uses it. You can also use this remedy topically to help dry out the lesions.
Garlic has antiviral properties helpful in treating herpes. Take 500 milligrams three times a day for one week. Then take the same dose once a day for one week.
Glycyrrhizic-acid ointment, formulated from licorice root, speeds healing. Goldenseal powder can be made into a paste and applied topically to dry out the lesions. Topical Melissa is an excellent healing salve for herpes.
A topical solution of grapefruit-seed extract and tea tree oil, available in health-food stores, fights bacterial and viral infection and can shorten the length of an outbreak.
