The antioxidant nutrients - vitamin A, beta-carotene, selenium, and vitamin E improve blood oxygenation, which helps guard the heart from the strain of high blood pressure. Take a good antioxidant formula that supplies 5,000 international units of vitamin A, 25,000 international units of beta-carotene, 200 micrograms of selenium, and 400 international units of vitamin E daily.

Note: If you are pregnant, or intend to get pregnant, or if you have liver disease, consult your doctor before taking supplemental vitamin A. If you are taking an anticoagulant (blood thinner), consult your physician before taking vitamin E.

Calcium and magnesium are important for maintaining proper muscle tone, including that of the heart and blood vessels. Calcium has been shown to lower blood pressure, and magnesium has been recommended for hypertension for over thirty years. Take 500 to 600 milligrams of calcium and 300 to 350 milligrams of magnesium twice daily.

Carnitine has a proven track record for protecting the heart, a particularly important consideration if you are taking beta-blockers, which work by interfering with the nerve and muscle actions of that organ. Take 500 milligrams of L-carnitine once or twice daily.

Coenzyme Q10 increases tissue oxygenation and has been shown to help bring down high blood pressure. It is also an excellent antioxidant. Take at least 100 milligrams daily.

The essential fatty acids (EFAs) found in black currant seed oil, borage oil, evening primrose oil, and flaxseed oil help reduce blood pressure levels. Choose any of these oils and take 500 to 1,000 milligrams two or three times daily.

Lecithin helps emulsify fat, and can be effective if you have a history of alcohol consumption. Take 1,200 milligrams two or three times daily, with meals.

Excessive consumption of salt coupled with low levels of potassium can lead to elevated blood pressue. Unless you are taking a potassium-sparing diuretic (for example amiloride [Midamor], dyrenium [Triamterene], and spironolactone [Aldactone]) or a combination diuretic that contains a potassium-sparing element, such as Maxzide, Dyazide, or Aldactazide, take 99 milligrams of potassium twice daily. If you are unsure about the type of blood-pressure medication you are taking, ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking potassium supplements.

People who are deficient in vitamin C are more likely to have high blood pressure than are those who maintain an adequate intake of this important vitamin. Take 1,000 milligrams twice daily.
