Aromatherapy is a form of herbal medicine which uses the essential oils to heal immune and nervous system problems. The essential oils of chamomile, lavender, and rosemary are soothing and excellent for relieving stress. Aromatherapy baths or compresses prepared with one or more of these oils can help ease inflammation and itching. Start with a small amount, and be careful not to use too much essential oil in these treatments.
Following are ten basic Essential oils and their functions:
- Lavender: overall first aid oil, antiviral and antibacterial, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, boosts immunity, antispasmodic.
- Marjoram: anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antiseptic.
- Chamomile: antiallergenic, anti-inflammatory, relaxant, digestive, antidepressant.
- Rosemary: stimulating to circulation, decongestant, relieves pain, improves circulation.
- Cypress: astringent, antiseptic, stimulating to circulation, astringent.
- Tea tree: antiyeast, antifungal, antibacterial.
- Peppermint: decongestant, digestive, antiseptic, clears sinuses, stimulant.
- Bergamot: antiparasitic, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory.
- Eucalyptus: decongestant, antibacterial, antiviral, stimulant.
- Geranium: anti-fungal, balancing to mind and body, anti-inflammatory.
Essential oils are highly concentrated aromatic extracts which can be distilled using leaves, grasses, peel of fruit, flowers, needles & twigs, wood and roots. Few guidelines to ensure safe and effective use of essential oils are given below. Please go through it before using essential oils:
- Avoid use of undiluted essential oils on the skin. They can cause burning, photosensitivity and skin irritation.
- Use only pure essential oils from plants and test for sensitivities.
- Keep all essential oils away from the eyes and also from young children.
- Don't take essential oils orally.
When using aromatherapy for children, keep in mind that they are smaller than adults. Go through below list for how to take proportions for children.
- Avoid use of essential oils on newborn babies until they are at least a week old. Then you can use lavender or Roman chamomile well diluted to a maximum of one-quarter of the standard amounts given.
- For 3 to 18 months babies, use one-quarter standard amounts given or increase carrier oil by four.
- For 18 months to 7 years babies, use one-half standard amounts or double carrier oil.
- If child is 7 years to 14 years old then use from one-half standard amounts to full standard amounts with a maximum of two to three per cent dilution.
