Exposure to extreme cold, or even moderately cold temperatures over a long period of time, can cause a lowering of body temperature. If body temperature reached 95oF or below, a person is said to have systemic hypothermia. Even cool temperatures can cause the problem for people who are already ill; who are on any type of sedating medication, including alcohol; or who are elderly or very young.
Symptoms include fatigue or weakness, later progressing to confusion, then stupor, sometimes intermittent. Once a person has developed true hypothermia, he or she is not likely to shivering. If nothing is done to correct the situation, coma and death result.
Even if hypothermia is properly treated, it is possible to develop organ damage later as a result. Possible complications following an episode of hypothermia include pneumonia, pancreatitis, kidney failure, and gangrene.
Prevention
When the weather is cold, dress in layers. Wearing several layers of loose, warm clothing not only helps to keep you from getting too cold, but also from getting too warm. If you start sweating, remove a layer. Otherwise, your sweat will cool your body down too much.
Before going outdoors in very cold weather, make certain your head, neck, and ears are well covered. Use any combination of hats, scarves, earmuffs, ski masks, and whatever other articles of clothing you find comfortable. This is particularly important on windy days.
When you will be spending time outdoors, take along extra socks and long underwear. Exchanging partially damp clothes for dry ones helps to maintain body temperature.
Before spending time outdoors, eat a nutritious meal or snack. Eating will make you feel warmer within ten to fifteen minutes.
When you get tired, seek warm shelter. A fatigued body has more difficulty staying warm.
Avoid alcohol and tobacco if you will be spending time outdoors in cold weather.
