Hypothermia Treatment

Obviously, rewarming is the treatment of choice, but the speed with which normal temperature is regained is important. Specifically, it should not be done at a rate greater than 1oF per hour. For mild to moderate hypothermia, resting while covered with a blanket in a warm room, to conserve residual body heat, may be sufficient, though ideally medical assistance should be enlisted to monitor for possible complications.

Severe hypothermia requires more active rewarming, including the administration of warm intravenous fluids and heated oxygen. Placement of a breathing tube and assisted breathing are usually necessary, along with close monitoring for complications, which are likely. If there is no pulse, electrical defibrillation is used to attempt to restart the heart.
