For gas symptoms, a product containing simethicone, such as Gas-X, Mylanta Gas, or Phazyme is likely to be recommended. Simethicone breaks up gas bubbles and tends to bring about some relief. These products are available over the counter.
For heartburn, antacids are the old standby of conventional treatment. This class of medications includes such well-known products as Tums, Rolaids, and Maalox, which buffer the acid in the stomach and tend to provide some relief. If you use these products, read labels carefully. Some utilize aluminum hydroxide, a form of aluminum, and while no firm connection has been established, high levels of aluminum have been linked to Alzheimer's disease. Choose a calcium-based product instead. Because some antacids can actually end up increasing the production of acids in the stomach, or cause constipation or diarrhea, they should not be used indiscriminately.
In addition to standard antacids, there is now a variety of acid-blocking agents available over the counter. These include nizatidine, famotidine, and cimetidine. It should be kept in mind that acid is present in the stomach for a reason, and that digestion and absorption may be adversely affected anytime these medications are used.
Drugs to speed the movement of food through the digestive tract can sometimes afford relief of acid-reflux symptoms. Examples of drugs in this class include cisapride and metaclopramide. Possible side effects of cisapride include headaches, visual disturbances, infections, and paradoxically, gastrointestinal problems; potential problems with metoclopramide include dizziness, high or low blood pressure, the development of tardive dyskinesia, and, again, gastrointestinal problems. These medications can also interact with other drugs, so discuss their use with your doctor before taking them.
