It consists of the use of topical antifungal agents, such as miconazole (in MonistatDerm), clotrimazole (Lotrimin, Mycelex), Ketoconazole (Nizoral), terbinafine (Lamisil), Ciclopirox (Loproxi), or naftifine (Naftin). Side effects tend to be limited, with burning, itching, redness, or stinging the most common.
To reduce inflammation while fighting the infection, a medication combining an antifungal with a topical steroid may be prescribed. Lotrisone is one example. Be aware that continued use of steroid creams can cause atrophy of the skin it touches. Normally, these medications are not necessary for jock itch.
Rarely, if the infection is extremely severe and/or persistent, an oral antifungal may be needed. Drugs of this type include fluconazole (Diflucan), ketoconazoile (Nizoral), otraconazole (Sporanox), and terbinafine (Lamisil). Most people experience no problems with these drugs, but they can cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, and rash in some people. In rare cases, they can cause liver stress.
