All disorders of the kidney are handled first by treating the underlying condition, if any, that is causing the problem. If no underlying cause is found, the following are the usual treatment approaches.
- If you have chronic kidney disease, you should seek out and work closely with a urologist or other physician who specializes, or at the very least has considerable experience, in the treatment of your condition.
- Infection is treated with antibiotics. Depending on the organism involved and the severity of the infection, either oral or intravenous antibiotics may be used.
- Inflammation of kidney tissues is usually first treated with a Corticosteroids such as prednisone (Deltasone). If that is inadequate, stronger immunosuppressant drugs are necessary.
- If you have kidney failure, your doctor will likely advise you to restrict your intake of protein , minerals, and, possibly, water to reduce the stress on your kidneys. If kidney failure is very severe, what is called end-stage, dialysis may be necessary. There are two principal types of dialysis. In hemodialysis, access to a vein is established, and blood flows from the vein through a filtering machine and is then returned to the body. Hemodialysis is usually performed three times a week, at home or in a clinic, with each session lasting about three hours. In peritoneal dialysis, a tube is inserted through the abdominal wall and a special fluid solution is introduced into the abdominal cavity that draws out waste materials from the blood stream. The fluid is then drained out of the abdominal cavity. Peritoneal dialysis has become more popular among many people with chronic kidney failure because it enables them to handle dialysis on their own, although infections are a common problem with his technique. Another option is a kidney transplant.
