Kidney Stones Treatment

Read more about...

The treatment for stones in the urinary tract depends on their size and location - whether they are in the kidney, ureter, bladder, or urethra.

If the stones are small and cause no symptoms, no treatment is necessary, although they should be monitored.

Larger stones that are causing obstruction can sometimes be treated with extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). In this technique, you are placed in a pool of water and high-frequency sound waves are sent through the water. This fragments the stones so that they can pass out of your body in the urine.

If ESWL is unsuccessful, and the urinary tract is obstructed, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove the stones. However, watchful waiting may also be recommended.
