Since the cause of this disorder is unknown, treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. Unfortunately, the drugs that are used for this problem have been found to adversely affect the healing process, so they are normally used for as short a period as possible.

Vertigo may be treated first with a drug like meclizine or dimenhydrinate, both antihistamines commonly used to treat motion sickness. Possible side effects include dry mouth, Sleepiness, and a decreased ability to concentrate.

If meclizine or dimenhydrinate proves inadequate, a transdermal patch containing scopolamine may be prescribed. Potential side effects of this drug are more severe, and include dry mouth, blurred vision, and urinary tract obstruction.

For the worst vertigo, diazekpam may be given intravenously. Side effects can include drowsiness, impaired memory, jaundice, and a low white blood cell count. This drug also has considerable abuse potential.
