Legionnaire's disease is a form of pneumonia that was originally difficult to diagnose because the organism that causes it, Legionella pneumophila, cannot be seen on the standard laboratory test done to identify microorganisms in sputum. As a result, doctors refer to it as an "atypical pneumonia," even though it is a common cause of pneumonia acquired in such community settings as hospitals and hotels. It is not usually transmitted from person to person, but spread through such mechanisms as air conditioning and ventilating systems.
The disease is more common in people with compromised immune systems and/or established lung disease as well as in smokers. The initial symptoms are similar to those of many other illnesses, including fever, fatigue, headache, and muscle aches. These are followed by the development of a cough, chest pain while breathing and/or coughing, and poor production of sputum. People with this illness usually appear and feel quite ill.
If Legionnaire's disease is suspected, tests on sputum, blood, and urine are performed, using special culture techniques to identify the infecting organism. An x-ray may be performed as well. This cannot provide a specific diagnosis, but it can show areas of disease in the lungs.
General Recommendations
Avoid exposure to any kind of smoke, especially tobacco smoke.
Use a cool mist humidifier to moisten and soothe your respiratory tract and thin secretions so that they are easier to cough out. A drop or two of essential oil of thyme, eucalyptus, pine, or orange added to the water in the humidifier may also help to ease breathing. Be certain to clean the humidifier every few days to avoid the buildup of bacteria and fungi.
Applying a warm castor oil pack on the chest once or twice a week can be very useful in helping to eliminate mucus. Either warm caster oil and saturate several layers of clean white cloth with the oil, or saturate the cloth, place it on a clean plate, and warm it in a microwave oven for twenty to thirty seconds. The pack should be warm but not hot. Place it over your chest and leave it in place for fifteen to twenty minutes.
