- Rely on medical personnel to take the appropriate measures. The primary treatment for poisonous snakebite is the use of intravenous antivenin for the correct class of snake, given as soon as possible after the injury.
- Many people have reactions to the antivitamin. If this occurs, you may need treatment with epinephrine and /or prednisone during or after treatment for the poison.
- Once the wound has been treated and you have recovered sufficiently from the effects of the injury to leave the hospital, medical personnel will advise you on the proper way to care for yourself as you recover.
- If you are bitten by a snake known not to b poisonous, the bite will be treated much like any animal bite.
Emergency Treatment
- Have someone take you immediately to the emergency room of the nearest hospital, or call for emergency medical personnel. Medical intervention is essential.
- If medical care is not immediately available stay calm and do the following:
- Lie down and remain as still as possible. Activity can spread the venom throughout the body. Try to keep the affected limb at the same level as your heart.
- If a venom extractor is available have someone begin applying suction immediately. It takes at least three minutes to begin adequate poison extraction. Continue suctioning out the venom for at least fifteen minutes and as long as an hour or until you can secure medical care.
- Do not let anyone make an incision into the bite, suck the poison out with his or her mouth, or apply a tourniquet, and do not take any medications of any kind. These actions create more problems than they solve.
- Do not use an ice pack on the wound. Cold therapy is not recommended for snake bites, as it can damage tissues. ,li>Have someone call your Poison Control Center for instructions on how best to treat you.
